  1.                            BibDB, Version 1.4d
  2.  
  3. This archive contains the documentation and executables of BibDB. BibDB is a
  4. program for creating, maintaining and updating literature reference
  5. libraries, in a format which is compatible with BibTeX, the standard LaTeX
  6. bibliography reference format. BibDB implements a user friendly,
  7. point-and-shoot type, mouse-oriented interface (although a mouse is not
  8. essential). BibDB also enables extensive search and pattern matching to be
  9. carried out. The program is highly configurable, to fit personal taste and
  10. different bibliography styles. Version 1.4 adds automatic support for sorted
  11. files, and allows merging of files (including a merge & sort combination). It
  12. also implements support for languages and keyboards other than English using
  13. the full 256 IBM character set, and allows the file and the display to be
  14. kept in 7/8 bit mode independently, performing automatic translation when
  15. necessary. In addition, version 1.4 adds support for simple page layout
  16. controls in the text, introduces a partial context sensitive help, and
  17. corrects even more bugs (!).

  19. Version 1.4d is a maintenance release, correcting one bug and an incorrect
  20. validation code in version 1.4c.

  24. READ.ME      - This file.
  25. READTHIS.NOW - Another Readme...
  26. BIBDB.EXE    - BibDB executable, for machines with 80286 and higher CPUs.
  27. BIBDB.HLP    - Help file for BibDB.
  28. BIBDB.CFG    - Default configuration file for BibDB, set for BibTeX.
  29. BIBDB.TEX    - The documentation for BibDB, written in LaTeX.
  30. BIBDB.PS     - The documentation for BibDB, compiled into a Postscript file.
  31. DOUBLESP.STY - A LaTeX (not AMS LaTeX!) style file, required for BIBDB.TEX.
  32. VERBATFI.STY - A LaTeX style file, required for BIBDB.TEX (if the relevant
  33.                commented lines at the end of BIBDB.TEX are restored).
  34. COLORS.EXE   - A program displaying the available colors.
  35. VALIDATE.COM - McAfee Associates' validation program.
  36. VALIDATE.DOC - Documentation for VALIDATE.COM.
  37. WHATS.NEW    - Version history of BibDB.

  39. In order to run BibDB only the files BIBDB.EXE, BIBDB.HLP and BIBDB.CFG
  40. are required.

  42. To LaTeX the manual you need the files BIBDB.TEX and DOUBLESP.STY.
  43. If you want to include BIBDB.CFG in the LaTeX manual, restore several 
  44. commented lines in BIBDB.TEX, at the very beginning and the very end of the 
  45. file. You will then also need VERBATFI.STY and BIBDB.CFG.

  47. If you use AMS LaTeX, edit the file BIBDB.TEX, and change the "1" in the 
  48. first line to "0". This inhibits use of DOUBLESPACE.STY, which is 
  49. incompatible with AMS LaTeX.

  51. Contrary to the usual practice, please READ THE MANUAL, especially the "It 
  52. Doesn't Work!" section and the description of the "\parameters" environment
  53. of the configuration file.

  55. Finally, I have gone to some trouble to try to make BibDB resistant to virus
  56. infections. Please do your bit:

  58. 1) Run VALIDATE on the executable files. The proper validation codes are:

  81. 2) The first time you run BibDB, put the parameter `selftest' to `on'.

  83. 3) If you are a believer in belt-and-suspender policies, run an up to date
  84.    virus scanner on the EXE files.
